Weight and Balance Management ─ Usage

Add or update the mass values for different mass types

In Teamcenter, you can enter the mass for a part or an assembly occurrence for all mass types except for the From Design mass type, which is reserved for mass from the CAD geometry. The From Design mass value is automatically updated as the design is modeled and saved from the CAD application.

Your access privileges decide if you can enter or edit the mass values for a particular mass type. Typically, Budgeted values are accessible only to users with specific privileges.

Understanding value restrictions for mass properties

Teamcenter does not allow you to set negative values in the tree structure and on the Weight and Balance tab for all mass properties, such as Actual Mass and Asserted Mass. If you enter a negative value, you get an error message. Similarly, you cannot enter a negative value for Weight, Density, Volume, and Area properties. However, you can enter negative values for other properties like Center of Mass and Moment of Inertia.

Teamcenter does not allow you to enter a negative value for the Budgeted Mass, Min Mass, and Max Mass properties in the tree structure. However, you can create a mass parameter with a negative value on the Parameters tab.

The From Design Mass values are published from a CAD tool, and these values are not editable in Teamcenter. For only the From Design Mass column, if the CAD tool publishes some negative values, you do not get any error message, because negative values are allowed for the From Design Mass column.

Procedure

  1. Search for and open the structure.
  2. Click the Edit.

The editable cells are activated.

  1. Enter or update the mass values as required.
  2. Save your changes by clicking Save Edits. To cancel your edits, click Cancel Edits.

Add minimum or maximum values for mass

You can specify the minimum or maximum mass for structures. This may be required to account for limitations due to manufacturing tolerance or other such considerations.

When rollup is calculated with minimum and maximum values, the report shows the rolled up value for minimum and maximum masses for the structure.

When the calculated rollup values are outside the specified minimum and maximum ranges, the values are highlighted in the rollup report. If the minimum or maximum value is not defined, the budgeted values are used for comparing the upper limit. The comparison with the minimum and maximum values is performed only for mass values and not for balance values.

To specify the minimum and maximum values for an occurrence:

Procedure

  1. Click Edit.

The editable cells are activated.

  1. Enter or update the mass values as required in the Min Mass, Max Mass, and Budgeted Mass columns.
  2. Save your changes by clicking Save Edits. To cancel your edits, click Cancel Edits.

Add minimum or maximum values for Center of Mass

Similarly, you can set the minimum and maximum values for Center of Mass (CoM) for the top-level assembly or a subassembly to ensure the rolled-up CoM is within the desired limits required by the product design considerations.

For the target management of any property other than mass, including the management of minimum and maximum CoM values, you must create a parameter with the type set as Point and the KPI set as CG.

You can also create and store minimum and maximum values for Moment of Inertia (MoI) and Product of Inertia (PoI), but these values are not used by Weight and Balance Management for calculations.

Procedure

  1. Select a structure element and go to the Parameters tab.
  2. In the Parameters section, click Add.
  3. In the Add Parameter panel, do the following:
    • In the Name box, enter a name for the new parameter.
    • From the Data Type list, select Point.
    • From the Unit of Measure list, select the required unit of measure.

Tip

We recommend selecting meter as the unit of measure.

  • From the KPI list, select CG.
  1. Click Add.
  2. Open the newly created parameter by clicking Open.
  3. Click Edit and, in the Min and Max boxes, add the minimum and maximum values, respectively.

Note

You must enter the values for Min and Max in the X, Y, Z format, for example, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5.

  1. Click Save.

Note

Weight and Balance Management uses only the Min and Max values. It does not consider the Goal value in calculations.
