Configuring Systems Engineering

Overview of Systems Engineering options

You can control the behavior and display of Systems Engineering features using options and preferences.

Preferences are configuration variables stored in a Teamcenter database that are read when a Teamcenter session is initiated.

Besides Systems Engineering preferences, Manufacturing Process Planner preferences and Structure Manager preferences are applicable to Systems Engineering. If you use preferences from both Structure Manager and Manufacturing Process Planner to control the same functionality, the Manufacturing Process Planner preference overrides the Structure Manager preference. For example, if you use both PSE_expand_on_open (a Structure Manager preference) and MEExpandFirstLevelOnLoad (a Manufacturing Process Planner preference), PSE_expand_on_open is overridden by MEExpandFirstLevelOnLoad.

Options are preferences presented in the rich client by category (in a tree), usually with predefined valid values. To set options in the rich client, choose Edit -> Options to display the Options dialog box, then select Systems Engineering from the Options list. Hover over an option to display the associated preference name and information.

Key options

Trace Link Mode — Choose whether trace link functionality is enabled.

  • Selected (ON): trace link menu and toolbar commands are available; if objects already have trace links, trace link icons appear in the navigation pane.
  • Not selected: trace link menus and commands are unavailable; trace links cannot be viewed or created.

Indirect Trace Link Search — Choose whether tracing includes indirect trace links (implicitly inherited by the item revisions of target objects).

  • Selected (ON): traces follow both direct and indirect trace links.
  • Not selected: traces follow only explicit trace links associated with target object items.

Left-Right Trace View — Arrange the Defining Object and Complying Object panes in the Traceability view.

  • Selected (ON): panes appear horizontally.
  • Not selected: panes appear vertically.

Apply Templates (for embedded editing) — Select which requirement content appears in the MS Word view.

Browse Clear Text — Select the appearance of text in the MS Word view.

  • Selected (ON): text appears as plain text.
  • Not selected: text appears as rich text (headings, body paragraphs, bulleted/numbered lists, special characters such as equations and symbols, hyperlinks, tables, and graphics).

Quick Create Panel — Choose whether to enable the Quick Create bar.

Calculate Defining/Complying Objects — Choose whether to display Defining Objects and Complying Objects properties in the Properties dialog box for requirements objects.

Keywords to Import — Enter keywords to define the start of requirements when a requirement specification is imported. When importing requirement specifications from Microsoft Office Word, Systems Engineering uses Word outline-level heading styles to parse documents into a hierarchy of parent, child, and sibling requirements. You can further control the separation of requirements using keywords that occur in content under the headings. Type keywords using a comma to separate multiple keywords; special characters and partial words are not supported.
