Why use Volume Management?

Primary disk space is expensive. Volume Management allows you to monitor volume usage and migrate infrequently used data to secondary and tertiary storage media. You can define various migration policies for specific types of data, and the system migrates the data based on the policies you define. You can define both volume management (VM) migration policies and hierarchical storage management (HSM) migration policies. VM migration policies specify data to be migrated from a source volume to a destination volume. These migration policies let you specify that data is migrated by saved queries, by watermark levels, or by migrating all data from the source volume. HSM migration policies direct data to be migrated between storage tiers. Data can be migrated from a primary to a secondary tier, from a primary to a tertiary tier, or from a secondary to a tertiary tier. These migration policies let you choose whether to purge the original data after migration, or to purge when specified watermark levels are reached.
