Shut down the SQL Server service

Procedure Log on to the operating system as a user with administrator privileges. Open the Windows Control Panel. From the Control Panel, double-click Services. From the list of services, select MS SQLSERVER and click Stop. To verify that the SQL Server service has stopped, check the Status column. When the service not running, the status is blank.
