Updating Aligned Engineering BOM

Manually update an aligned engineering BOM for a change context

When a design structure is updated, you must analyze the impact of the design changes on the corresponding engineering BOM, that is, Usage BOM or Assembly BOM. Subsequently, you must update the engineering BOM so that the part occurrences are correctly aligned with the design occurrences.

To update the aligned engineering BOM manually, perform a guided update under an active change in a two-step process. When you perform a guided update under an active change, only modified assemblies are considered for alignment updates. The rest of the assemblies are ignored.

Procedure

  1. From Inbox or Changes, open the active change.

  2. From Change Summary, select the top most modified design assembly and click Update Alignment > Guided Update.

    The design structure and its aligned engineering BOM are displayed side by side. The Guided Update panel opens in Design Part Alignment mode. The panel shows the context of the alignment, that is, the design and part level that are selected for alignment, along with the direction of alignments from the design structure. The direction is shown using an arrow in the alignment context.

  3. (Optional) Select the Show Alignment Status option to see alignments as they are done.

  4. (Optional) Select the Show Redlines option to see the changes in the structure.

  5. Ensure the BOM Updates option is selected.

    The BOM Updates option is selected by default and allows for structure modifications along with alignments. If you turn off this mode for design-part alignment, you cannot activate it again for design occurrence-part occurrence alignment after design-part alignments are complete.

  6. Review the required changes in the Guided Update panel.

    In the Guided Update panel, all the required changes are listed. At the selected level, only its first-level modified designs are shown in the panel.

    The design assembly on which you initiate a guided update is shown in focus mode, while the rest of the assemblies are grayed out.

  7. (Optional) Select the All Levels option if you want to do design-part alignments on all the structure levels for the selected context.

    Only design-part alignments can be done at all levels at the same time. No matter the status of the All Levels option, design occurrence-part occurrence alignments are always performed level by level.

    The panel displays various filters, for example, Matches, Add New, Remove, and Replace. Each filter shows the count of the designs that it matches. The filter selections do not impact the alignment operation. By default, the panel selects the filters on which your action is requested.

  8. (Optional) Select one or more filters to see the respective designs and their possible alignments.

  9. Review the possible alignments and available actions in the panel.

    The panel shows the possible alignments, along with different actions you can take and information about each action. Select each design from the panel to highlight it within the structure.

    You can take the following actions:

    • Align — Align the part and design. Select a design from the existing list. Preferred parts appear at the top, separated from the rest of the structure.
    • Defer — Take action at a later stage. It is recommended to perform maximum possible alignments without deferring them.
    • Modification Actions: Add, Remove, Replace, Modify — For the Add action, you can add a new part or search for an existing part for alignment. If you do not add it manually, the alignment process adds it for you.
  10. Click Update Design Part.

    Your part and design alignments are updated. If you have deferred any alignments during the design-part alignment stage, those are shown in the panel as one more chance to align them else the panel goes into BOM Alignment mode for design occurrence-part occurrence alignment with the initial context node in focus. The panel again shows the context, direction, and filter tiles for design occurrence-part occurrence alignment with possible matches based on your design-part alignment.

  11. Verify the alignments.

    If you have deferred any alignments during the design-part alignment stage, now in occurrence alignment you get one more chance to perform those alignments. It is recommended to perform maximum possible alignments without deferring them. At this stage if you decide to perform alignments, both design-part and occurrence alignments are done simultaneously.

    For a flexible part that aligns with multiple designs with different IDs, the panel lists all relevant designs in a single row as a comma-separated list, together with the corresponding prospective part occurrence for alignment. If multiple designs share the same ID, the panel summarizes them into a single design occurrence row and shows the prospective part occurrence for alignment.

  12. Click Update.

    Design and part occurrences are now aligned at the selected level.

  13. Click Next to initiate design occurrence-part occurrence alignment for the next modified level under the selected context.

  14. Continue to verify the alignments and update until all the levels are design occurrence-part occurrence aligned.

Your design structure and engineering BOM alignments are updated.

What to do next

After updating the aligned engineering BOM, perform an alignment check to verify if the engineering BOM is updated and aligned correctly. Next, release the active change notice.
