Add and manage occurrence substitutes for a part in a structure

A substitute part is a part that can be used in place of another part in a specific product configuration. In a structure, you can add a substitute for a part, remove a substitute, and set a substitute as primary item. If you add and manage occurrence substitutes in an active change notice, the changes are indicated by redlining.

Restrictions and limitations You can add and manage occurrence substitutes for a part in a structure if your Teamcenter setup includes the BOM Structure Management license.

Procedure Select the part for which you want to add a substitute.

Click Add

Substitute .

Note You can use the Substitutes section in the Overview tab to add a substitute only when at least one substitute is already added for the item.

In the Add Substitute panel, click one of the following tabs:

On this tab, you can add a new occurrence.

Palette

On this tab, you can paste an occurrence from the clipboard or select one from your Favorites or Recent list.

Search

On this tab, you can search for an occurrence to add.

In the Add Substitute panel, select the part that you want to add as a substitute. You can select multiple parts.

Click Add. The selected occurrence of the parts are added to the structure. The Substitute Indicator column displays for the primary part and for the substitutes. The Substitutes column shows the substitute name for the primary item. The occurrence attributes of the primary part, including find number, are also set for the substitutes. The Substitutes section of the Overview tab for the selected primary part displays the information for the substitutes.Click Configuration Settings

Show Substitute Components to show or hide the substitutes in the structure.If you copy or cut a primary part to the same structure or to a different structure, all occurrences of the substitutes along with the attribute information are also copied. If you insert a level on the primary part, all substitutes are also moved along with the primary part. If you remove a primary part from the structure, all its substitutes are also removed.

Remove a substitute

If a substitute is no more a valid substitute for any reason, you can remove it. Procedure Select the substitute that you want to remove and click Edit Structure

Click Remove on the confirmation message.

The selected substitute along with its information is removed from the structure.

Set a substitute as a primary part

At times, you might want to mark a substitute as a primary part in the structure. After you mark the substitute as a primary part, the original primary part becomes substitute for it. Procedure Select a substitute that you want to set as primary part in the structure. If you select multiple substitutes, the last substitute that you selected is chosen as primary.

Right-click and select Set Primary .

The selected substitute is set as a primary part and the primary part is set as a substitute in the structure.
