Building and editing product structure > Defining substitute components
Define substitute groups
A Substitute group refers to a group of components that are interchangeable with another group of components in a BOM view revision (BVR). This substitution is valid only in the context of the specific BVR. Substitutes groups are often defined for manufacturing purposes, allowing the use of the substitute if the preferred parts are unavailable, for example, due to a stock shortage. If the substitute groups are interchangeable under all circumstances, regardless of where they are used in the product structure, consider creating a global alternate group. In Teamcenter, you can add the interchangeable parts while creating the substitute group or after creating it.
