Replace an element in a structure

By replacing a structure element, you retain the occurrence data so that it is assumed by the replacement. Occurrence data (such as properties, trace links, and notes) is lost if you cut the old element out of the structure and paste in a new element.

Tip: To automatically obtain the replacement's item identifier, you can copy the replacement to the clipboard. The item identifier is required in the Replace dialog box.

Procedure

  1. Select the occurrence to replace, and then choose Edit→Replace... to open the Replace dialog box.
  2. In the Item ID box, enter the item identifier of the replacement occurrence.
    • The item identifier is populated from the clipboard if you copied the replacement before selecting the old occurrence.

Tip: To search for the identifier, you can click the Item Name button to use the Open by Name dialog box.

  3. Under Replace, select one of the following:
    • The original — Replaces the selected occurrence only.
    • Adjacent occurrences — Replaces all occurrences of the selected item revision that appear in the parent structure.
    • All occurrences in top_level_name — Replaces all occurrences of the selected item revision, regardless of their position in the structure.

Caution: You cannot cancel the replacement of multiple occurrences once the replacement is in progress.

  4. Click OK to start the replacement.
    • A progress indicator appears until the replacement is complete.

Note: If any replacement action fails, the process continues with other occurrences. Elements not replaced are reported when the progress indicator closes.
