Methods for updating an aligned engineering BOM
After an aligned engineering BOM (Usage BOM or Assembly BOM) is generated from a design structure, if any changes are made to the design structure, you must update the engineering BOM. You can not update an aligned precise engineering BOM.
The different methods to update the aligned engineering BOM are:
- Automated update – Update the engineering BOM automatically either in a change context or without setting a change.
- Guided update – Get guidance for updating the engineering BOM based on the design changes either in a change context or without setting a change.
- Drag and Drop – Drag a design occurrence to a part occurrence.
For a design occurrence that is aligned to multiple part occurrences, the update process considers all the aligned part occurrences for modifications.
To generate partitions that correspond to specific design occurrences, set the Part Required field to False, and also set the specific property for partition generation as defined by your administrator.
You can assign a specific part number to design occurrences using the Assigned Part Number property. When updating an aligned engineering BOM, the corresponding parts are created with that assigned part number. However, if a design-part alignment preexisting, the Assigned Part Number property is ignored. This property is cleared after the parts are generated.
If you modify a design structure to include manufacturing features such as welds, fasteners, fastener group, or arc weld and datum point, then during the alignment update, the aligned engineering BOM (Usage BOM or Assembly BOM) is updated with the same manufacturing features, along with the synchronized connection information.
Based on the grouping criteria set by your administrator, multiple design occurrences are logically grouped together into a single part occurrence. Additionally, during a guided update and automated update, the engineering BOM, along with the solution variants that are associated with it, are also updated.
Spare parts must be created manually, or by using the drag-and-drop functionality, because they do not participate in the alignment process.
Example
Consider that the design structure of a Wheel consists of a Tire, Rim, and Valve, and that it has the corresponding engineering BOM P_Wheel, along with P_Tire, P_Rim, and P_Valve.
The design structure of the Wheel is updated to include Bolt as a new design occurrence. The engineering BOM for Wheel does not have the corresponding Bolt part occurrence yet.
Upon performing an automated or guided update, the following results take place:
A new part occurrence, P_Bolt, along with its alignment, is created under P_Wheel. The quantity of P_Bolt is set to 2.
The following table shows how the quantity of a part occurrence is calculated in some unique cases:
