Modeling systems > Associating system model blocks with other objects using trace links

Manage trace links in the Documentation tab editor

You can create and manage trace links in the Documentation tab editor.

The following procedure details trace link creation with requirements, but the procedure applies to the other supported objects such as system model blocks.

For general information about working with trace links, see the Active Workspace Fundamentals documentation.

Restrictions and limitations: You can create one-to-many or many-to-one trace link relationships. You cannot create many-to-many trace links.

Procedure

  1. Locate and open the requirement content (requirement specifications, requirements, or paragraphs).

The requirement content appears in the Documentation tab editor.

  2. In the Documentation tab editor, click Trace Link.

Tip: You can use the keyboard shortcut Alt+L to create a trace link. You can also create a trace link from the Table view by clicking Create Trace Link from the Trace Link column of a requirement.

The Create Trace Link panel appears with the selected requirement as the starting object in the Start section.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • Drag the selected objects to either the Start or End sections.
    • In the Documentation tab, click the icon next to the requirement you want as the end object.
  4. (Optional) In the Start and the End section, do any of the following:

To Do this
Remove requirements from the trace link Select the requirements in either the Start or End section, and click Remove. (If the Start or End section contains multiple start objects or end objects and you want to remove them all, click Remove All.)
Add a new starting trace link object Click Add. The Add Start panel appears. Select an object from Palette, or Search for workspace objects within the selected configuration.
Switch the direction of a trace link Click Swap. The Start object becomes the End object and the End object becomes the Start object.
Switch the selected object from Revision to Occurrence or from Occurrence to Revision Click Switch to Occurrence, or select Switch to Revision.
  1. Select the Type and click Create.

Results

A message confirms the trace link is created. The trace link icon turns bold to indicate that a trace link is active. This icon also shows trace links to Polarion ALM objects.

The Create Trace Link panel remains open and retains the last used trace link type and occurrence setting. You can create additional trace links by changing the Start or End objects, the trace link type, or the occurrence setting.
