Import a requirement specification from Word

Caution: In .NET Web tier (middle tier) configurations, importing large documents can cause the server to time out. You can edit the Web.config file to resolve server time-out issues.

  • The specification document must carry the .docx file name extension.
  • To generate separate requirements within Word outline levels, Teamcenter Extensions for Microsoft Office must be installed on your computer.

Tip: Before you start this procedure, you can do the following:

  • Specify the object type for the top line of the imported structure, by editing the TcAllowedImportExportPeakSpecObject preference.
  • Exclude unwanted specification types from the Spec type list in the Import Spec wizard.

Note: You can assign a subtype to the imported requirements during this procedure.

Procedure

  1. In the Home view, select the folder to which you want to import the structure.

If no folder is selected, the specification is imported to the Newstuff folder.

  2. Choose File→Import Spec.

    The Import Spec wizard appears.

  3. For the Enter Information for Import step, do the following:

    • Designate the import document by doing one of the following in the File name box:
      • Click the browse button (...) to the right, navigate to and select the document, and then click Import.
      • Enter the document's full path directly in the box.
    • In the Spec type list, accept the default value or select a different specification type.

You can also do the following optional actions for the Enter Information for Import step:

    • Use the Description box to enter general information about this import.
    • Check the Import as child of selected element box to add the structure to an existing specification.
  4. Click Next to advance to the Select Import Options step.

  5. To parse the document by outline levels only:

    • Click Import as single subtype to display a list of subtypes.
    • Select Requirement, Paragraph, or a custom subtype defined in your Teamcenter environment.
    • The subtype is assigned to all requirements that are imported from the document.

To parse the document by outline levels and keywords, do the following:

    • Click Use keywords for import. The Keywords box and the = list become available.
    • Enter the keyword or keywords in the Keywords box.
      • Tip: Use a comma to separate two keywords. Special characters and partial words are not supported.
    • In the = list, select the subtype to assign to each requirement imported from the document.
      • Note: Keywords in the = list set the value of the REQ_import_keywords user preference. You cannot set the REQ_import_keywords site preference from the Import Spec wizard.
  6. Click Finish.

Systems Engineering displays the specification in a new Requirements view. Below the top level, the structure consists of parent, child, and sibling requirements according to the outline levels in the import document.
