Teamcenter Partitions — eliminating structure duplication

Problem: engineering organizations need multiple perspectives on the same product (by system, function, zone, etc.), but the traditional way to get those perspectives — parallel/duplicate BOMs — creates duplication, maintenance overhead, and data-integrity risk.

Core concept: Partitions separate the authoring structure (what the product is) from viewing structures (how different roles see it). As the blog puts it: "Not every view needs to be a new BOM."

How it works:

  • Partitions are independent business objects that organize occurrences within an existing structure without owning or duplicating it.
  • Multiple partition schemes can apply to the same occurrence simultaneously.
  • Membership can be manually assigned or rule-based ("recipe-driven").
  • Partitions preserve configuration integrity while adding flexibility.
  • A single EBOM can be viewed by system architecture, function, or spatial breakdown — all without creating parallel BOMs; users switch between partition schemes or filter the structure.
  • Partition schemes can be static (architect-authored) or dynamic (auto-populated via rules).

Strategic advantage claimed: organizations can introduce new views incrementally at any program stage without restructuring or re-releasing the source BOM — no need to predict every organizational breakdown upfront.

Multi-BOM edits (change-at-scale)

Problem: engineering teams often need to update multiple BOMs across platforms/product lines at once (supplier discontinuation, design optimization, cost initiatives, compliance changes). Manual, one-BOM-at-a-time editing is "time-consuming" and "prone to errors that can ripple through production, procurement, and downstream systems."

Capability: Teamcenter lets users "edit the structure of one or multiple BOMs directly within an Engineering Change Notice (ECN)" in one interface:

  • Search/identify affected assemblies
  • View impacted components via a Change Content view
  • Batch-replace parts across structures with a "Replace All" action
  • Apply changes for design updates, cost reduction, regulatory compliance, platform standardization
  • Track modifications with redlines for traceability

Color BOM at scale

Problem: manufacturers need to manage product personalization (color variants) efficiently, but there's a disconnect between CAD designers (who prefer working with one generic part) and engineering teams (who need precise, manufacturable color specifications) — historically resolved with manual duplication and error-prone workarounds.

Capabilities:

  • Color Library Management — centralizes approved color specs to support change/review workflows, "leading to faster approvals, fewer errors."
  • Color Explosion Automation — automatically generates all required color variants from a single generic part ("automate[s] the generation of all required color variants"), rules-based and governed.
