MS Word view user interface

Note: To use the MS Word view, you must enable it to open Word files in a browser.

The MS Word view embeds Microsoft Office Word in the Systems Engineering perspective. In the embedded window, you can work with the Word content of requirements and paragraphs, functions, logical blocks, and custom notes.

The MS Word view displays rich-text content by default. Rich-text content can include headings, body paragraphs, bulleted and numbered lists, special characters such as equations and symbols, hyperlinks, tables, and graphics.

To have the MS Word view open a Requirement object embedded in the rich client rather than open in an external instance of Microsoft Word, follow these requirements:

  • The rich client bit version must match the bit version of Microsoft Office. Therefore, if you are using a 32-bit rich client, then your Microsoft Office is also 32-bit. Similarly, if you are using a 64-bit rich client, then your Microsoft Office is also 64-bit.

Do the following:

  • Enable the MS Word view to apply document templates.
  • Enable the BrowserFlags Registry entry for Microsoft Word.
  • Switch the MS Word view to plain text.

You can open multiple instances of the MS Word view, with separate views for different selected objects. For each selection, choose View→Show MS Word View, or click MS Word View on the Systems Engineering toolbar.

Note: Because of limitations in third-party software, the toolbar can be disabled in one or more of the multiple instances. If a toolbar does not respond, click anywhere outside that view in the Systems Engineering main window. Then, click inside the view to enable its toolbar.

  1. Embedded Word window — Contains the Office ribbon and the document pane, which displays the content of the selected object.

  2. Save button — Commits content changes to Teamcenter. (You can also use Word's Save button and features such as Ctrl-S.)

  3. Hide/Show MS Office ribbon button — Minimizes or restores the Office ribbon in the embedded Word window.

  4. Associate this 'Secondary' view to a different 'Primary' view button — Displays a list of primary views with which the MS Word view can be associated. The input to the MS Word view is synchronized with other open views that use the selected primary view. For example, to synchronize the MS Word view with the selected object in the Trace Links view, do one of the following:

    • In the list for the MS Word view, select the same primary view that is used by the Trace Links view.
    • In the list for the Trace Links view, select the same primary view that is used by the MS Word view.
    • In the list for each view, select None.

Then, you can select an object in the Trace Links view and display its Word content simultaneously.

  5. Disable response to selections button — Retains the currently displayed content regardless of the selected object.

  6. Set input to recent selection button — Displays the content of the last object selected.

  7. View Menu button — Displays a menu containing commands that correspond to the three previous buttons.

  8. Minimize button — Reduces the MS Word view to the background. Minimizes all other views displayed in the same pane. At the extreme right of the main window, the minimized pane is represented by a vertical toolbar containing the following buttons:

    • Restore — Redisplays all previous views in the same pane.
    • Function #0 — Displays the Quick Create bar for a function object.
    • Requirement specification — Redisplays the Requirements view that contains the object's parent structure.
    • Word document — Redisplays the previous MS Word view.
  9. Maximize button — Enlarges the MS Word view to occupy the entire Systems Engineering main window.
