Add and manage a substitute group for parts in a structure

When two or more parts in a structure have the same set of substitutes, you can define these substitutes by using a substitute group. For example, a structure contains different caps for the 12V, USB-A, and USB-C charging ports in the car and you want to define similar substitute items for them. In such a situation, you can select these caps as the primary items in the structure, create a substitute group, and then define the substitute parts. If you add and manage occurrence-based substitute groups in an active change notice, the changes are indicated by redlining.

Restrictions and limitations

You can add and manage a substitute group for parts in a structure only if your Teamcenter setup includes the BOM Structure Management license.

Procedure

1. Select two or more parts in the structure for which you want to add a substitute group.
2. Click Add > Substitute Group .
3. In the Add Substitute Group panel, ensure that the Occurrence Substitute Group type is selected, and then perform the following tasks: In the Properties section, specify a name and description for the substitute group. In the Primary Elements section, ensure that the required parts are listed. In the Substitutes section, specify a name for Substitute Set ID and then click Add to add substitute elements. Tip Using the Add Substitute Elements panel, you can now add one or more substitute elements. All the substitutes that you add become a part of the substitute set. After you click Add , For example, in the first substitute set, you can add three caps as substitute parts for the 12V, USB-A, and USB-C charging ports. To add another substitute set, in the Substitutes section, click Add . You can add multiple substitute sets.
4. Click Create. All the substitutes that you selected are added to the structure. The Substitute Indicator column displays for the primary parts and for the substitutes. The Substitutes column shows the substitute names for the primary parts. The occurrence attributes of the primary part, including find number, are set for the substitutes. The Substitutes section of the Overview tab for the primary part displays the primary parts, the substitute sets, and the substitutes.
5. To remove a substitute, substitute set, or a primary part, select the item in the Substitutes section, and click Remove .

Add a primary part to the substitute group

You can add another part from the structure as a primary part to the existing substitute group. For example, suppose that the USB-B port is added to the newer model of the car. In such a situation, you might want to add the cap for the USB-B port as a primary part to an existing substitute group.

Procedure

1. In the Substitutes section, select the Elements node, and click Add Elements . The Add Elements panel appears and displays the remaining parts from the structure.
2. Select a part and click Add. The selected part is added as a primary part to the substitute group and the information about the substitutes is also added for it.

Add a substitute set to the substitute group

You might want to add another set of items as substitutes for the primary parts. In such a situation, add a substitute set to an existing substitute group.

Procedure

1. In the Substitutes section, select the substitute group, and click Add Substitute . A substitute set is added.
2. Select the newly added substitute set and click Add Substitute .
3. In the Add Substitute Elements panel, search for an existing substitute or add a new substitute and click Add. The substitute is added to the selected substitute set.

Map a substitute to a primary part

You can map a substitute to a primary part in the group. For example, map the newly added cap as a substitute for the primary cap for USB-C port.
