Usage BOM (Teamcenter 2512) — Occurrence-Centric BOM Management

What it is

Usage BOM is a new BOM architecture introduced in Teamcenter 2512. Where traditional Assembly BOM is "revision-centric and often managed by a single author," Usage BOM is occurrence-centric — each part usage (occurrence) can be managed and changed independently of the owning assembly's revision.

Assembly BOM (traditional model):

  • Changes tied to assembly revisions — each modification requires a new revision
  • Works well for simple, low-variability products with single-engineer/CAD-driven management
  • Requires sequential changes and locking structures, which can slow development

Usage BOM (new, 2512):

  • Decouples changes from revisions by managing individual part occurrences independently
  • "Multiple engineers can collaborate on the same BOM at the same time, making changes in parallel."
  • "Engineers, manufacturing planners, and service teams can all work on the BOM simultaneously."
  • Supports full effectivity management (date, unit, or milestone) without disrupting overall BOM integrity

  • Gives manufacturing/service teams occurrence-level control, regional effectivity tracking, and better change propagation across MBOM/SBOM

Selection guidance given by Siemens: use Usage BOM for high-variability products needing concurrent collaboration; keep Assembly BOM for simple, CAD-driven products needing tight revision control.

  • Concurrent collaboration — multiple engineers across engineering, manufacturing, and service edit the BOM simultaneously, no sequential waits or locked structures.
  • Occurrence-level change tracking — changes per part usage without requiring a new assembly revision; supports "fine-grained control over individual part usages" and out-of-sequence revisions.
  • Automated alignment — the system "automates the alignment between design and part structures," reducing manual reconciliation effort.
  • Effectivity management — "effectivity by date, unit, or milestone, making it easy to manage regional customization, modular kits, and service-specific parts."

Performance/scalability claim

Usage BOM uses a "flat structure" that Siemens says "improves performance," positioned as suited to complex, high-volume products (automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery), reducing unnecessary duplication and supporting concurrent engineering.

Notes / caveats

  • These are vendor blog claims, not independently benchmarked performance numbers — no concrete throughput/latency figures were published in either post.
  • Usage BOM is a genuinely new (2512-era) architecture; older tutorials, videos, and forum discussion (most of what's findable on YouTube/community, see other files in this set) predate it and describe the traditional Assembly BOM / revision-rule model exclusively. Treat Usage BOM as the current-release direction, not yet the dominant install-base pattern.
