File scanning process

You may allow suppliers to connect to existing File Management System (FMS) networks and to upload files into FMS volumes. As suppliers connect to your network from other companies and networks, the Teamcenter destination site loses control of the safety of uploaded files. Configuring FMS to scan files for viruses as they are being uploaded, and to reject uploads that fail the check, protects your internal system from potential viruses. The following shows a basic topology for a virus scan configuration. (This is not a required configuration but represents a common configuration that many sites may employ.) You can configure a quarantine volume on an FMS server cache (FSC) server to invoke a third party virus scanner on files being uploaded through it. This configuration allows uploaded files to be scanned before the file is available for download. Siemens Digital Industries Software recommends that this be a separate managed location away from FMS volumes. When a file is routed through an FSC that has a quarantine volume defined, it is scanned for viruses. Only uploads performed after you configure the scanner and the quarantine volume can be scanned for viruses. Any file uploaded previously cannot be scanned by FMS. A user starts the upload of a file using the rich client, Active Workspace, or the Data Share Manager. If the file is routed through an FSC with a quarantine volume, a virus scan is initiated. The file is uploaded to the quarantine volume temporary storage location. When the upload is complete, FMS runs the virus scan script file. If the script fails to operate properly, a virus scan failure is reported. The file is scanned according to the individual scanner and configuration. Results are processed by the script file returned to the calling FSC. If no virus is found, the file is forwarded to the destination FSC according to the routing. FMS commits the file to the destination volume and informs the client that the upload was successful. If a virus is found, FMS returns an error to the client and displays an error to the user. The upload fails. Files that fail the scan are removed from the quarantine volume.
