Designing functional and logical architectures > Diagramming architectures in Microsoft Office Visio
Create a diagram
Note Microsoft Visio Professional must be installed on your computer; Visio Standard is not supported. Multiple Visio Diagram views can be open simultaneously in Visio. The diagram's owning object does not appear in the diagram.
Procedure
Do one of the following:
- In the Function or Logical Block view: select the object to become the diagram owner, then choose File→New→Diagram (or right-click the object and choose Create Diagram).
- In an open parent diagram: for a child diagram that inherits the parent's application domain, right-click the shape for the diagram owner and choose Open Diagram. For a child diagram in a different application domain, right-click the shape and choose Create Diagram....
The Create Diagram dialog box opens.
Note With Visio, multiple diagrams can be open simultaneously. You are not prompted to save those diagrams before the Create Diagram dialog box can open.
Type the diagram name in the Name box. Optionally:
- ID — type an object identifier, or click Assign to enter the next available identifier automatically.
- Description — type a description of the diagram, such as its purpose or content.
- Open check box — clear it to create the diagram object without opening it in the Visio Diagram view (leave it selected to create and open the diagram).
Note You cannot change the Application Domain (shows the default for the diagram owner's object type) or the Select Template (shows the default diagram template for the diagram owner's object type). You can use the
NE_default_application_domain_templatepreference to change the default application domain and diagram template.Click OK to create the diagram object in your Newstuff folder.
If you leave the Open check box selected, the diagram opens in the Visio Diagram view. The diagram contains a shape for each direct child of the owner. You can edit the diagram to modify the structure in Systems Engineering.
Tip The diagram is empty if a structure does not exist below the owner. You can create subordinate elements by adding shapes to the diagram from a Teamcenter stencil. If the diagram template uses multiple Teamcenter stencils, a window-shade button for each stencil is displayed in the leftmost pane of the Visio Diagram view — click a window-shade button to see the shapes in that stencil.
