Configuring structures by using Product Configurator variants > About solution variants

Create a solution variant

Procedure In Product Configurator, create a configurator context with groups, families, and features as follows. In Structure Manager, open the structure for which you want to create a solution variant, and apply the configurator context you created. Enable the Solution Variant Category column. This column is not available by default. To insert this column, right-click on a column, select Insert columns, choose Solution Variant Category, click Add, and then click Apply. In the Solution Variant Category column, select one of the following categories for the solution variant you want to create. Reuse: You can create only one solution variant for an SVR from the same source structure. If you try to create a solution variant for the same SVR from the same source structure, the system reuses the existing solution variant. If the source structure changes, you can update the solution variant structure. Regardless of this, the system automatically applies the changes from the source structure to the solution variant structure. You cannot make structural changes such as adding, removing, or revising BOM lines in the solution variant structure. Managed: You can create multiple solution variants for the same SVR from the same source structure. If the source structure changes, you can compare the changes with the solution variant structure and merge the changes manually. You can make structural changes such as adding, removing, or revising BOM lines in the solution variant structure. Unmanaged: You can create multiple solution variants for the same SVR from the same source structure. If the source structure changes, you cannot update the solution variant structure, that is, there is no sync mechanism. You can make structural changes such as adding, removing, or revising BOM lines in the solution variant structure. Apply the features you created in the configurator context to the respective BOM lines in the structure. To open the Variant Configuration view, click Set option values for selected module on the main toolbar. Select the required features. Selections are indicated by a check mark or a circle backslash icon in a cell. The check mark indicates that the option is included in the product configuration. The circle backslash icon indicates that the option is excluded from the configuration. Alternatively, click Load Variant Rules and select an SVR.

Note The solution variant is always created based on the applied SVR on the assembly or the structure. To validate if the selected features are applicable to the structure, click Validate . To apply the selected features to the structure, click Applies the current configuration to the associated structure . Create a solution variant for a single level. Use this option to create a solution variant for the root line of the structure. Select Tools→Solution Variant and clear the Enable Multi-Level Creation option.

Note You can create a solution variant for a single level only for theManaged and Unmanaged categories. For the Reuse category, the system creates the solution variants for multiple levels, and in this case, you must select the Enable Multi-Level Creation option. To create the solution variant, click Solution Variant.

Tip You can set the PSESolutionVariantAutoCreate site preference to false to create a solution variant by specifying a name. Alternatively, set it to true to create a solution variant with a system generated name. Create solution variants for multiple levels. Use this option to create a solution variant for the complete structure. Select Tools→Solution Variant and select the Enable Multi-Level Creation option. By default, the system creates solution variants for multiple levels. To create the solution variant, click Solution Variant. (Optional) Select Dry Run and click Start. Alternatively, click Start to create a solution variant without performing a dry run. The solution variant is created with the name and ID format that your administrator sets.
