Weight and Balance Management ─ Usage

View and manage weight and balance data

You can view and manage the weight and balance data of structure elements in the Mass Properties section within Weight and Balance. Mass Properties summarizes all mass and balance properties related to the selected structure element.

Procedure

  1. Select the structure element (part) in the BOM, for which you want to view the weight and balance data.
  2. Click Weight and Balance.

The Mass Properties section displays all weight and balance information for the selected structure element.

  1. (Optional) Set Asserted, Actual, or Estimated mass in Teamcenter for the selected component.

The mass published from the CAD applications based on geometry is published to the From Design mass property.

To make a cell in the table editable, double-click in it. Then, add new values or modify or delete existing values. When you exit the cell, the edited data in the cell is automatically saved.

Note

If Teamcenter is integrated with NX or CATIA, the From Design column shows the data from NX or CATIA.

You cannot modify the data for the From Design and From Design (Coated) weight types.

If you author a mass value that is other than the From Design value, for example, Asserted or Actual in Teamcenter, the moment of inertia (MoI) and product of inertia (PoI) values are scaled proportionately in the rollup report. Scaling is the automatic proportional adjustment of the inertia values. It happens only when Teamcenter picks mass other than From Design. The scaling is based on the inertia values from the geometry that is published from the CAD applications, such as NX. Teamcenter assumes that the shape and center of gravity of the part remain constant when scaling the inertia values.

The scaled inertia values are available only in the rollup report and are not displayed in the Weight and Balance tab.

Example

Through physical testing, you discover that the manufactured part is slightly heavier than what the CAD model predicted. You need to assert a new mass value in Teamcenter to reflect this change.

The original From Design mass was 2.5 kg, and the original MoI values were Ixx = 0.0045 kg⋅m², Iyy = 0.0038 kg⋅m², and Izz = 0.0028 kg⋅m².

After you assert a new mass value of 2.625 kg (a 5% increase from the original), the inertia values are scaled proportionally with the mass change and are displayed in the rollup report. Because the mass increased by a factor of 1.05 (2.625/2.5), the inertia values scale proportionally. Therefore, the new MoI values are Ixx = 0.00473 kg⋅m² (0.0045 × 1.05), Iyy = 0.00399 kg⋅m² (0.0038 × 1.05), and Izz = 0.00294 kg⋅m² (0.0028 × 1.05).

Thus, Teamcenter automatically adjusts the inertia values while maintaining the geometric proportions of the part when a different value for mass is asserted.
