Configure the engineering BOM generation
Set the criteria to group design occurrences
You can set a criteria to group design occurrences into a single part occurrence in the generated engineering BOM (Usage BOM or Assembly BOM). You set these criteria in the Pma0_Summarized_EBOM_Grouping_Criteria preference by specifying the properties to be considered for grouping the design occurrences. By default, the design occurrences are grouped using the sequence number and variant properties.
Consider that you use the bl_grouping_indicator property instead to set the grouping criteria. All the design occurrences that match these criteria are grouped together.
Scenario 1: Same design, different variant conditions, and same grouping indicator
Design structure: three positions (P1, P2, P3) of "Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon" with variant conditions 2.0 Ton GVW, 3.5 Ton GVW, and 5.0 Ton GVW respectively, all with grouping indicator Y.
Generated engineering BOM: a single Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon part, quantity 1, with variant condition "2.0 Ton GVW OR 3.5 Ton GVW OR 5.0 Ton GVW".
Scenario 2: Same design, different variant conditions, and different grouping indicator
Design structure: positions P1 (2.0 Ton GVW, indicator Y), P2 (3.5 Ton GVW, indicator Y), P3 (5.0 Ton GVW, indicator N).
Generated engineering BOM: one Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon part, quantity 1, variant condition "2.0 Ton GVW OR 3.5 Ton GVW"; and a second Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon part, quantity 1, variant condition "5.0 Ton GVW".
If one of the Quantity is As Required, and other is non-as required (some tangible value) then summarization is skipped. Similarly, for non-matching UOM values, summarization is skipped.
Scenario 3: Same design, same variant condition, and same grouping indicator but with different quantity
Design structure: P1 (2.0 Ton GVW, indicator Y, Quantity = 3), P2 (3.5 Ton GVW, indicator Y), P3 (3.5 Ton GVW, indicator Y), P4 (5.0 Ton GVW, indicator Y, Quantity = 3).
Generated engineering BOM: one Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon part, quantity 3, variant condition "2.0 Ton GVW OR 5.0 Ton GVW"; and a second Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon part, quantity 2, variant condition "3.5 Ton GVW".
Scenario 4: Same design and overlapping variant conditions
Design structure: P1 ("2.0 Ton GVW OR 5.0 Ton GVW or 10 Ton GVW", indicator Y), P2 ("5.0 Ton GVW or 10 Ton GVW", indicator Y), P3 ("10 Ton GVW", indicator Y).
Generated engineering BOM: three distinct Fuel Tank, 30 Gallon parts, quantity 1 each, with variant conditions "2.0 Ton GVW OR 5.0 Ton GVW or 10 Ton GVW", "5.0 Ton GVW or 10 Ton GVW", and "10 Ton GVW" respectively.
Even though the grouping indicator is the same for all designs, if the variant conditions of the designs overlap, three distinct part occurrences are created. In this example, the variant conditions of the three positions of the fuel tank are not distinct and there is an overlap with 5.0 Ton GVW and 10 Ton GVW appearing in more than one condition.
Scenario 5: Same design with same count of different variant conditions
Design structure: positions P1–P32 of a Bolt design with variant condition "Base", indicator Y; positions P110–P142 of the same Bolt design with variant condition "Deluxe", indicator Y.
Generated engineering BOM: a single Bolt part, quantity 32, variant condition "Base or Deluxe".
Scenario 6: Same design with different count of different variant conditions
Design structure: positions P1–P32 of Bolt with variant condition "Base", indicator Y; positions P110–P150 of Bolt with variant condition "Deluxe", indicator Y (different count of positions than the Base group).
Generated engineering BOM: one Bolt part, quantity 32, variant condition "Base"; a second Bolt part, quantity 40, variant condition "Deluxe".
Scenario 7: Design occurrences set to traverse the node but to skip the structure
Let us try to understand this scenario through an example. Consider the following structure of a Crosskart. Here, some designs are set as TraverseNode, SkipStructure in the Pma0_DBOM_skip_node_conditions preference. The corresponding usage BOM, the generated usage BOM is as follows:
Note: The source topic includes a structural diagram illustrating the resulting usage BOM for this scenario, which could not be transcribed as part of this text extraction.
